Michael is a Managing Director of Pomegranate Capital Advisors, Inc., and Muir Detlefsen & Associates Limited, both active investor advisory firms. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors and Audit Committee of SunOpta (TSX:SOY; NASDAQ:STKL), as a member of the Board of Directors, Audit Committee and Conduct Review Committee (Chair) of State Street Bank & Trust Canada, and as a member of the Board of Directors, the Audit Committee, the Science Committee and the Governance and Compensation Committee (Chairman) of Phoenix Canada Oil Company Limited (TSX:PCO). He is also Governor of the Royal Ontario Museum, where he serves on the Philanthropy Committee and is the former Chair of the Governance and Nominating Committee.
Throughout his career, Michael has held senior executive positions at various companies, including: Organic Meadow Inc. (2014-2015); Ceres Global Ag Corp. (2009-2014); Maple Leaf Foods (1999–2007); Bell Canada and Bell Canada International (1996–1999); and, Air Canada (1989–1993), with a focus on strategy development and execution, mergers and acquisitions, and operational turnarounds. In addition, on behalf of Pomegranate, Muir Detlefsen (2007-current), Monitor Company (1993-1996) and Price Waterhouse (1988-1989), he has provided strategic and operating advice to pension funds, hedge funds, family offices and corporate clients. He holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Harvard University, a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from Queen’s University in Kingston, ON, and the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
Tom has deep financial, transactional and corporate governance knowledge and experience. He co-headed Canada’s largest M&A and investment banking firm, was Chief Financial Officer of a major Canadian public company and has served on many public company Boards of Directors. He is highly regarded within the business community for his integrity, analytical, strategic and tactical skills, and his ability to get things done. He is a Fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario (FCPA, FCA) and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators (FCBV).
